The creation of Juan Valdez
In 1960 the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia invented Juan
Valdez, a friendly, mustachioed coffee grower who, with his mule, trundled his
handpicked beans down from the Colombian mountains. Jose Duval played the
part of the proud, yet humble, character that captured the American
imagination. By 1962 the campaign was so successful that many roasters
not only bragged that their blends contained Colombian beans, but also began
marketing 100 percent Colombian cans
